About Junoon in the Hills (Ranikhet)

"Getaway to the hushed haven in the hills"

At an altitude of about 4500 feet, and 70km from the railhead at Kathgodam, Darmani is a small and sleepy village of a few hundred people. Untouched by the hustle of modern life, set in a remote village near Ranikhet in the Kumaon Hills, Junoon in the Hills is a place to unwind, relax, and re-discover yourself. Friends, family, peaceful contemplation, wandering through the mountains, catching up on reading and music - choose your pleasure. When the sky is clear - typically in the winter months between October and March - there are beautiful views of the distant snow-clad Himalayas, especially Mount Trishul and Nanda Devi.

A resort set amidst the lush greens of the Himalayas, comfortably planned all well-appointed rooms. The facilities planned keeping guests needs during all seasons, the boutique resort is equipped with heated floors and blankets for your comfort during winters. Wood-burning stove and an open fire-place in the drawing room. In summers, there are many windows to let the breeze in, and air-conditioners to keep you cool for the occasional warm day.

Each bedroom on the property has its own attached bathroom with a shower and electric water heater.

During the winter, the heated floors in the drawing room in the Main House keep you warm. We also provide electric blankets to keep you cozy and snug, and heaters if required. There is a wood-burning stove and an open fireplace in the drawing room. Of course, double brick and insulated walls mean it's always warmer inside than out...!

In the summer, on the other hand, there are many windows to let the breeze in, and air-conditioners to keep you cool for the occasional warm day. Outdoors, you can sit in the shade and enjoy a cool drink with the gentle summer breeze.

Long walks along the country road are enjoyable, with some beautiful valley and snow-capped Himalayan views in the winter - you can spend hours just soaking these in...

For the more adventurous, there are mountain trails winding through small villages all the way down to the stream at Garampani. Our staff can help you decide what you'd like to do, and arrange for local guides if needed.

If staying longer, Darmani is well situated for trips to local destinations. Nainital is due south, a little over an hour away. Similarly, Ranikhet and Almora are about 40km away, further north. Various other local sites - such as Bhimtal, Naukuchiyatal, Mukteshwar, Sitla, and other Kumaon destinations - are all within easy motoring reach, allowing for comfortable day trips.

Our staff can arrange for local taxis to travel in the hills, at very reasonable rates - just ask!

You can choose to simply do-nothing and unwind. Catchup on a book you wanted to under a tree with our picnic basket or simply go walking and explore the mountains around you. You can carry your own liquor for the calm and quiet evenings.

Visit on a long-weekend and  relax, catch up with each other, get pampered, play pool, stay fit in the (small but adequate) gym, or watch some TV. It's a great way to unwind leaving behind the busy city life

.

When visiting for a long weekend, most visitors prefer to just stay at home, relaxing and catching up with each other, getting pampered, playing pool, staying fit in the (small but adequate) gym, or catching some TV.

Book a spa and massage therapy session with prior intimation and we can have experts at your command while you are visiting.

Getaways

Junoon is built like our home to ensure that each room has its own view of the valley and the mountains beyond.

The entire grounds of the property, and the various decks and gardens, are yours to enjoy. A TV and HD satellite dish connection in the family room means you don't have to miss that sports event or serial that you want to watch... When the electricity supply fails (mostly during the day, rarely at night), UPS power back-up means you can continue to watch TV for at least an hour or so. Even better, you can relax by the fish pond or on the deck with a nice book.

We have recently installed a broadband Wi-Fi connection in the family room – along with a PC for basic email and browsing. The network can be temperamental, though – depending on whether there is power availability at the relay centres in the hills. As a back-up, your Airtel and Vodafone mobile data connection will work here (GPRS), if all else fails…

In addition, there is a pool table, as well as a gym - both of which can only be used by those over the age of 15.

During your stay, please do keep in mind that while we're delighted to have you as guests, it is a home we have built with love and passion. Please respect and look after it while you enjoy it - as you would your own home!

Explore the outdoors to your hearts content while you are there or stay with us and write your book. Celebrate your special moments with us and we will make sure we make it special for you!

Ranikhet, home to the Kumaon Regiment and bristling with good old-fashioned military atmosphere, spreads over rolling green hills with some lovely views over the distant Himalayas. The focus of the town is a busy bazaar area, but you don’t have to walk far along the winding Mall Road to be immersed in forest and tall English trees. Apart from a military museum, some peaceful walks and views of snowcapped peaks, there’s not much to do in in Ranikhet.

In 1869, the British established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here and used the station as a retreat from the heat of the Indian summer. At one time during the British Raj, it was also proposed as the summer headquarters of Government of India, in lieu of Shimla. In 1900, it had a summer population of 7,705, and its corresponding winter population was measured in 1901 as 3,153.  Previously, Ranikhet was under Nepalese Rule, and Kumaon won it back under the leadership of their able General Kashi Nath Adhikari in 1816.

The town of Ranikhet is at an average elevation of about 1,900 m (6,100 ft.).  It can become very cold in the winter, but remains moderate in summers, and is best enjoyed from March to October. Ranikhet gets snowfall in the winter season, mainly in the months of December, January and February. But in the rest of the year the weather of Ranikhet remains pleasant.

Places to visit include the Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum, the Jhula Devi Temple, and the Rama Mandir.
